Most importantly its unleashing the intellectuals/capabilities of the mass...sometimes a platform open to innovators from the world versus a specific company servicing a small customer demand is more flexible to changes, making the innovation speed much faster and "flow" to changes ..

This is an especially attractive alternative when the equipment we need are not even mass-produced in the first place, drastically reducing the price of the product for consumers/innovators..
